Matrix Screensaver — Falling Green Code, Full Screen
Falling columns of glowing green characters, full screen, running at whatever speed and density you like. The original film's code was made from mirrored katakana photographed off a monitor; this version renders in the browser and never needs to load a thing.
What people use the matrix screensaver for
Ambient background for a desk or stream
A second monitor running digital rain is the cheapest set dressing there is — good behind a stream, at an event, or on a spare display.
Set the scene
Themed parties, film nights, Halloween, anything wanting a nineties-cyberpunk look with zero setup.
Screensaver without installing a screensaver
Locked-down work machine, borrowed computer, kiosk display — a browser tab works where an installer does not.
How to use the matrix screensaver
- 1Press F for fullscreen.
- 2Adjust speed and density to taste — slower and sparser reads as more atmospheric.
- 3Switch the colour if you want something other than the classic green.
- 4Press space to pause.
Frequently asked questions
What are the characters in the Matrix code?+
In the films, mostly mirrored half-width katakana with some Latin digits mixed in. The production designer built them by scanning characters out of his wife's Japanese cookbook, then photographing the result off a CRT to get the glow.
Do I need to install anything?+
No. Everything on whitescreen.studio runs inside the browser tab you already have open. There is nothing to download, no extension and no account.
Is it free?+
Yes, all of it, with no sign-up and no usage limit.
